MaryAnn De Salva

Betsy Gordon (editor)  Wicked Sunny (illustrator)

Price:$13.95

“Percy is different from the other pelicans. His older brother Jabber constantly picks on him. No one knows about Percy’s secret… a special gift that enables him to protect those he loves. This endearing little hero will delight young readers, while teaching them a valuable life lesson.”

About the Author

After 34 years of teaching high school English, MaryAnn DeSalva, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, retired, and with her husband Dwight, began their journeys between Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Pass Christian, Mississippi.

It was in The Pass where the pelicans touched her heart and her imagination, and became the subject for her first children’s book, PERCY’S SPECIAL GIFT. The book is intended not only to amuse and entertain young listeners and readers, but also to inspire a respect for themselves and an acceptance of differences in others.

Editorial Review:

This debut children’s book by retired high-school English teacher MaryAnn De Salva is a delight to the eyes and the heart. De Salva was inspired by the pelicans of Pass Christian, Mississippi, where she and her husband spend part of each year.

Flora and Oliver Pelican set up their nest on Rocky Island, in a colony of pelicans who (like De Salva and her husband) migrate there annually. Two baby pelicans soon hatch. Jabber, the first-born, turns out to be big and strong – and noisy, and something of a bully. Percy, hatched several days later, is smaller, quieter, and much sweeter-tempered. In addition, Percy has something that might be considered a flaw among pelicans: a tooth, which shows every time he smiles.

Percy’s mother is beautifully supportive and encouraging to her little pelican. She assures him again and again that he is special, and his tooth is a special gift… “but how you use it will be what is important.” Sure enough, as Percy grows, he discovers that his tooth gives him the power to find things that are missing, the power to call upon extra strength within himself when necessary, and the power to use his special gift to help the ones he loves.

This book is an excellent choice for children who have not quite outgrown books with attractive and interesting pictures, but who are beginning to enjoy “chapter books.” Perfect for reading aloud, and equally good for the child who has begun to read on his own, PERCY’S SPECIAL GIFT will delight children from kindergarten age through the early grades.

Stunningly beautiful full-color illustrations by Wicked Sunny illuminate the book. The combination of gorgeous pictures, an endearing little hero, and a life lesson worth learning makes PERCY’S SPECIAL GIFT an outstanding small book. We look forward to De Salva’s next offering to “all the children of the world.”
